The Pneumococcal Vaccine Immunization Schedule

The pneumococcus conjugate vaccine is given at 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks. It is given on the right thigh as an injection.

The common side effects are high temperatures, poor feeding and pain at the injection site. These resolve within a day or two.

The pneumococcal vaccine is a conjugate vaccine.

Pneumococcal Infections in Children

Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. It is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can affect people of all ages, but it is particularly dangerous for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems such as sickle cell disease.

Symptoms of Pneumococcal Disease

Pneumococcal disease can cause a variety of illnesses, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Pneumonia is the most common form of pneumococcal disease and it can cause symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Meningitis is a serious infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, and it can cause symptoms such as headache, fever, neck stiffness, and confusion. Bloodstream infections can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition that can cause organ failure and death. It is one of the leading causes of death in children with sickle cell disease and other chronic diseases.

Complications of Pneumococcal Infections

In addition to causing these serious illnesses, pneumococcal disease can also lead to long-term complications such as hearing loss, brain damage, and amputation. These complications can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life and can even be fatal in some cases.

Prevention of Pneumococcal Infections

Fortunately, the pneumococcal vaccine is highly effective at preventing these illnesses and their associated complications. The vaccine has been shown to reduce the incidence of pneumococcal disease by up to 90%, and it is considered one of the most important and effective vaccines available, particularly for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. By getting vaccinated, we can help prevent the spread of this dangerous disease and protect ourselves and our communities from its harmful effects.
